The Complete Guide to Website Design Costs in Tanzania (2024/2025)

Published: 1 November 2025 · Prices in TZS & USD
Every week someone asks me: "Daktari, how much does a website cost in Tanzania?" The honest answer is "it depends" — but not in the vague way agencies use it to hide their pricing. This guide breaks down real 2025 prices for schools, clinics, SMEs and personal brands, from a doctor who also builds software. No inflated agency mark-ups, no hidden extras.

01 Quick answer: typical 2025 prices

Type of websitePrice (TZS)Price (USD)Timeline
Personal / portfolio (1–3 pages)350,000 – 900,000140 – 3603–7 days
SME brochure site (4–8 pages)800,000 – 2,500,000320 – 1,0001–3 weeks
School / college website1,500,000 – 3,500,000600 – 1,4002–4 weeks
Clinic / hospital website1,800,000 – 4,000,000720 – 1,6002–4 weeks
E-commerce (M-Pesa / Tigo Pesa)3,500,000 – 9,000,0001,400 – 3,6004–8 weeks
School / clinic management system5,000,000 – 20,000,000+2,000 – 8,000+6–16 weeks
Custom AI tool (RadAssist-class)8,000,000 – 40,000,000+3,200 – 16,000+2–6 months

Reality check: if a quote is under TZS 300,000 for a "full website", someone is either losing money, using a stolen template, or you'll be paying the real price later in fixes, downtime and re-builds. Very cheap is almost always the most expensive option.

02 What actually drives the price

Two websites that look similar can differ by 10× in price. Here's what moves the number:

  • Number of pages and features. A 4-page brochure vs. a 40-page bilingual site with a blog.
  • Custom design vs. template. A designed brand identity costs more than a Bootstrap theme.
  • Content. Do you provide the text and photos, or do we write in English & Swahili and shoot?
  • Database & logins. The moment a website stores data (students, patients, orders), price multiplies — you're now paying for a system, not a brochure.
  • Payments. M-Pesa, Tigo Pesa, Airtel Money and card integration each add real engineering time.
  • SMS / WhatsApp. Sending exam results by SMS or automating WhatsApp replies costs both build time and per-message fees.
  • AI features. Chatbots, document Q&A, image analysis — these carry ongoing token costs on top of the build.
  • Speed & SEO. A fast, SEO-optimized site takes more skilled hours than a slow, generic one.

03 Cost breakdown by institution

Schools & colleges

Most Tanzanian schools need two different things and confuse the price of one with the other:

  • A public website (news, admissions, gallery, contact) — TZS 1.5M – 3.5M.
  • A management system (students, teachers, exams, fees, results, attendance) — TZS 5M – 15M depending on how many modules and whether you need parent SMS/WhatsApp notifications.

Yearly running cost (hosting, domain, SMS bundle, small updates): usually TZS 600,000 – 1,500,000.

Clinics & hospitals

Beyond a website, most clinics need appointment booking, patient records, prescription printing and a simple billing view. Base clinic website: TZS 1.8M – 4M. Adding a proper EMR-lite / clinic management module: TZS 6M – 18M. As a doctor I build these to match real Tanzanian clinic workflow — not a generic US template that ignores cash payments and NHIF.

SMEs (shops, tour operators, consultancies)

A well-designed 5–8 page bilingual website with WhatsApp button, contact form, and Google Maps typically lands at TZS 1M – 2.5M. Add product catalog + M-Pesa: TZS 3.5M – 7M. Full e-commerce with stock, invoices and shipping options: TZS 7M – 12M.

Personal brands & professionals

Portfolio, CV, doctor/lawyer profile with booking form: TZS 350,000 – 900,000. This is where templates make the most sense.

04 Custom vs. template: honest comparison

Rule of thumb: if data lives inside your website, go custom. If it's just a business card online, a template is fine — just don't pay agency-custom prices for it.

05 Recurring costs no one warns you about

  • Domain (.co.tz, .com): TZS 35,000 – 90,000 / year.
  • Hosting: TZS 120,000 – 900,000 / year depending on traffic and whether it's a system with a database.
  • SSL certificate: usually free (Let's Encrypt) if your developer sets it up.
  • SMS credit (results, reminders): TZS 25 – 45 per SMS via NextSMS / Beem.
  • Email (branded): from TZS 15,000 / mailbox / month with Google Workspace or Zoho.
  • Maintenance retainer: TZS 150,000 – 800,000 / month for institutions that want guaranteed response times.

06 How to get an honest quote

  1. Write 5–8 sentences describing what the website must do, not what it should look like.
  2. List the users (public visitors, staff, admin, parents, patients) and what each needs to do.
  3. Note any integrations: M-Pesa, SMS, WhatsApp, existing spreadsheets.
  4. Share your budget range. Not sharing it doesn't get you a better price — it just gets a slower quote.
  5. Ask for a fixed-price scope plus a clear change-order rate (per-hour or per-module).

Any developer who won't put pricing and scope in writing before you pay a deposit is a risk. That includes me — I put it in writing.

07 Get a price for your project

I'm Dr. Moses Kayungi — a Tanzanian medical doctor who builds websites and management systems for schools, clinics and SMEs across East Africa. If you'd like a written, itemized quote for your project, send a short message describing what you need.

Note on prices: figures above are typical 2025 ranges based on projects delivered across Iringa, Dar es Salaam, Mbeya and Dodoma, plus published rates from Tanzanian agencies and freelancers. Your final quote depends on scope, timeline and content readiness. Prices exclude 18% VAT where applicable.
